In 2000 the European Union and its 78 African-Caribbean-Pacific partners signed the Cotonou Agreement, thereby heralding a new era in developmental politics. In the Treaty the European Union set out its commitment to assist its African-Caribbean-Pacific partners 'on the objective of reducing and eventually eradicating poverty consistent with the objective of sustainable development and the gradual integration of the ACPcountries into the world economy'. This book draws attention to limitations in the European Union's approach to implementing pro-poor, environmentally sustainable development amongst its African-Caribbean-Pacificpartners.
