Introduction -- Migration in Europe -- Transit in Europe : the case of Greece -- Being in transit -- Transit in the Maghreb : sub-Saharans and El-Harga -- Transit in the east : shifting borders-- Conclusion.
Traditional approaches to migration put migrants in clear-cut categories: legal or illegal, newcomers or settlers. This innovative study explores an often-ignored phase in the migration process, focusing on theperiod between emigration and settlement. Looking at Europe, Asia and Africa, and focusing on three different migration routes, 'Transit Migration' reveals that migrants and refugees live in transit for years, and that it is a key issue affecting transit, destination countries and the migrants themselves. In particular the book explores: why do migrants stay 'in transit' and how do they experience this situation? How do countries react to transit migration and what challenges does this pose for them and for the migrants? What sustains transit migration and how can this be addressed? It will be invaluable to those studying migration, refugees and race and ethnic studies.
