Introduction: changing worlds of work -- Work in the global economy -- Into the temping zone -- Jumping around: translocal movements -- Just-in-time: temping timelines and time tools -- Expectation and evaluation -- Contingent communities -- Renderings: fragments of freedom.
Workplace Vagabonds, or people who make up the new worlds of flexible work, are pioneers in establishing new ways of relating to work, career and community. With new organizational models and enhanced global competition, workplaces, contracts, and notions of career lose their traditional bearings. People find alternative ways of navigating in the labour market and of relating to work. And these ways are fraught with tensions and contradictions. This book engages with the increasing flexibility of work contracts, and transforming notions of career and community at a transnational temporary agency. What does being 'flexible' mean in practice? What can the move towards flexible work contracts tell us about organizational change in general, and about changing forms of workplace control in particular? This book explores these questions from inside a major temporary staffing company in the US, UK, and Sweden.
