Introduction; M.Viren -- When Welfare Economics and Gambling StudiesCollide; L.Farrell -- Demand Issues in the Market for Lotto and Similar Games; D.Forrest -- Lottery Design Lessons from the Dismal Science; I.Walker -- Lotteries as a Source of Revenue; S.Smith -- Problem Gambling and European Lotteries; M.Griffiths -- The Economics of Scale and Scope in the Lottery Industry; M.Viren -- ThePolitical Economy of Regulating Gambling: Illustrated with the Danish Case; M.Paldam.
In the past decade gaming markets have evolved rapidly. Spearheadingthis change has been the internet, which has enabled cross-border gambling on an unprecedented scale. State-owned lottery companies have legal monopolies in almost all European countries, but the increase in cross-border gambling trade places them in a difficult position. This book presents the key issues in the gaming debate, including: taxation of lotteries; welfare and fiscal considerations; potential changes to marketstructure if restrictions on cross-border gambling are removed; and public policy concerns. A host of international contributors examine the economics of gambling in detail, offering a theoretical andempirical basis from which a discussion on the role of government in regulation, taxation, and production of gambling services can take place. This volume explores the changing landscape of the gamingmarket and is a crucialcompanion for scholars and policymakers looking for informed discussion on the future of gaming.
