Governing electronically
e-government and the reconfiguration of public administration, policy and power /[electronic resource] :Paul Henman. - Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire ;Palgrave Macmillan,2010. - xii, 271 p. :ill.
Includes bibliographical references and index.
Part 1. Examining e-government. Conceptualising technology and government -- The governmentality of e-government -- Part 2. Domains of e-government. E-welfare -- E-tax -- E-health -- pt. 3. Reconfigurations of government. Reconfiguring public administration -- Speed, time and the future -- Networks and conditionality -- Risk and targeted government -- Complex government -- Reconfiguring power, citizenship, society.
While technology is increasingly a central component for the operation of government, its role is poorly understood. This ground-breaking and insightful book uniquely utilizes Foucault's governmentality approach to examine the nature of contemporary, technologically-facilitated government. Drawing on six detailed case studies of e-government in welfare, health and taxation, the book demonstrates that information technology is more than just a tool for politicians and policy-makers, but contributes to the very substance and reconfiguration of public administration, public policy, power and citizenship. Moreover, governmental changes are analysed in terms of networks, risk, speed, complexity, power and citizenship.

"This book provides rare insights into the nature of contemporary, technologically-facilitated government. Its multidisciplinary approach demonstrates that information technology is more than atool for politicians and policy-makers.
