The South in World Politics is a timely analysis of the influence and effectiveness of developing states in shaping the international orderfrom the politics of the Cold War to the challenges ofglobalization and the rising power of emerging economies. Serving as a mobilizing symbol for a diverse set of developing countries, the idea of the South is part of a strategy for managing relations with the more powerful industrialized North through collective activism in multilateral and regionalorganizations. Key themes addressed by the book include the dynamic role of leading states like India, Brazil and China, the growing importance of regional organizations and the rise of Southern civilsociety in shaping the political agenda and the ideological outlook of the global South. Finally, thebook focuses on the implications of a raft of new challenges for the security and economic aspirations of developing states.

"The demise of the Cold War and the spread of globalization seemed to end the era of solidarity politics pursued by the developing world, or the "South." This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the changing dynamics of the South and its relationship to the issues, content and structureof the evolving international system"--Provided by publisher.
