Introduction : cultural criminology and the joy of transgression -- Celebrity, fame and culture -- The culture industry and Foucauldian governmentality -- Resonance and celebrated criminality -- Celebrated criminality and governance -- The undermining of celebrated criminality -- The evolution of celebrated criminality -- Conclusion : celebrating crime in a celebrity culture.
We live in a celebrity culture where even criminals can become 'well-known' and celebrated ona mass scale. This book engages with the concept of celebrity and its relationship with crime through criminals who become celebrities (criminal celebrities) and celebrities who become criminals (rogue celebrities). Drawing on a range of case studies, Foucault's theory of governmentality is used toexamine the influence of celebrated criminals as a controlling force in contemporary society, examining high profile criminals such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Krays, Al Capone, Myra Hindley and Ian Brady; and celebrities such as OJ Simpson, Winona Ryder, Martha Stewart, Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson.
