A unique look inside consulting, in which an historical review from premodern times and live contemporary interactions reveal the shadowy consultant figure, one very different to that of current research and literature. Drawing on sources as diverse as Plato, Machiavelli, Catherine of Aragon and the salonnaèires, the historical review shows the dilemmas (and critiques) of consulting are notnew. These link to competing discourses such as the trusted adviser versus the objective professional. The author uncovers a feminine discourse of consulting in small scale consulting work in the public and not-for-profit sectors that challenges stereotypical images of the slick showman aiming to maximize his fees. Power, emotion and values dominate the interactions in this book and connect to the webs of relationships of those involved, their multiple identities and how they see the commercialprocess. Critical Discourse Analysis illustrates these key themes and informs a feminine discourse of consulting, which offers practitioners and researchers steps towards a critical consulting practice.
