Critical identities in contemporary Anglophone diasporic literature
[electronic resource] /Franðcoise Krâal. - Basingstoke, Hampshire ;Palgrave Macmillan,2009. - x, 189 p. ;23 cm.
The figure of the migrant has been celebrated by some as an icon of postmodernity, an emblematic figure in a world increasingly characterized by transnationalism, globalization and mass migrations. Fraçnoise Kárl takes issue with this view of the migrant experience, addressing thelong-term consequences of in-betweenness and hybridity, in particular the social, ethical and political repositioning of the diasporic subject. She also discusses issues linked to bilingualism and polyglossia andin particular the redefinition of the role and status of the mother tongue and of the adopted language. She studies the features of the new world geography sketched in contemporary Anglophone literature in order to rethink postcolonial paradigms relating to territoriality. ?Critical Identitiespresents in-depth analyses of writers as diverse as Salman Rushdie, Caryl Phillips and Zadie Smith,as well as emerging writers like Monica Ali, Kiran Desai, Hari Kunzru, Jhumpa Lahiri and MG Vassanji.#0
