Securitizing Immigration develops an original framework for analyzing the securitization of immigration in the EU. Focusing on bureaucraticpractices and political discourses since the late 1970s, van Munster explains how immigration has become increasingly central in EU policy-making as a security issue that requires new forms of control. He also shows how securitizing immigration has had profound political implications for the EU. The EU is increasingly thought of as a place of unease where individuals are integrated through their concerns and worries aboutundocumented immigrants and other unwanted forms of mobility. This book critically discusses these tendencies and considers other, less exclusive forms of imagining European belonging.
