A Brief History of International Policing -- Kosovo and East Timor -- RAMSI -- Afghanistan and Iraq -- The New International Policing in Theory -- The New International Policing.
From Iraq to Afghanistan, from Kosovo to the Solomon Islands, in recent unilateral, regional and UN missions police personnel have increasingly been deployed outside their own domestic jurisdictions in executive, inline or advisory positions to help uphold law and order and rebuild states. This book contends that this increase in the scale and reach of policing roles represents the emergence of a new phenomenon b6 s a 'new international policing'. It begins by outlining the early stages of this phenomenon before laying out a number of detailed case studies of recent international police deployments Beth Greener discusses a range of important theoretical issues including the status ofthe police-military divide and the concept of legitimate 'authority', before considering the ramifications that the new international policing has for international security. The book outlines the kinds of diverse challenges and opportunities this phenomenon presents for both practitioners and theorists.
