垃圾是我們時代的象徵. 我們產生的廢物量及我們處理它的方式充分說明了我們的消費模式和繁榮程度 - 及社會不平等的程度. 什麼比垃圾更能說明不平等? 富人比窮人消費更多, 產生更多的浪費. 但有些人扔掉, 有些人卻需要它生存. Godwin Ochieng住在肯尼亞內羅畢貧困郊區丹多拉, 那裡是非洲最大的垃圾場之一, 他花了很多時間來整理無數堆垃圾, 這些垃圾是從城市較富裕的地區帶來, 希望能從中找到可賣的東西 : 對他而言, 垃圾山是一條生命線. 與此同時, 皮埃爾.西蒙斯(Pierre Simmons)住在世界上最富裕、最昂貴的城市之一, 他在紐約街頭整理可以出售給回收公司的罐頭. 這兩個人都生活在貧富差距巨大的國家, 但美國和肯尼亞之間的經濟和社會差距也很大. 經濟學家Lucas Chancel和Kate Raworth警告國家和國際層面巨大失衡的後果, 他們認為,這對我們整個價值體系及對民主和經濟的理解構成了巨大的危險
