Introduction: The role of the intellectual -- pt. 1. Literature and civility : liberal solutions to political conflict. Matthew Arnold, culture and the intellectual. The Habermasian public sphere -- pt. 2. Contesting civil order with proletarian experience. The counter-public sphere. Thinkingsubjects -- pt. 3. Impossible subjects : proletariats, savages, and historical materialism. The savage and the proletariat. Proletariats and urban intellectuals -- pt. 4. Radical intellectuals and thepeople. Speaking for the people. Outsiders: women and radical theory.
Intellectuals and the People is extensively researched and engages with prominent theorists in order to intervene in contemporary debates about the relation of intellectuals to society. It setsout to demonstrate that discussions of the intellectual and society focus upon the vulnerability ordeclining authority of the intellectual and overlook the extent to which supposed differences betweenintellectuals and 'other people' support wider existing social and political inequalities. Angie Sandhu focuses on the implication of power and authority for intellectuals and their work and arguesagainst the notion that intellectual autonomy is beneficial either for intellectuals or society. She places intellectuals in a more constructive and egalitarian relation to 'other people', and concludesby referring to the promising development in Latin America, in particular the Zapatistas, who are challenging inequalities and hierarchies within theory and practice.
